Bar Stools
A bar stool built for a hospitality venue has to survive a different kind of use than one built for a kitchen island at home. It gets sat in and slid across concrete or tiled floors for ten hours a day, sometimes seven days a week, by a different person every twenty minutes. Sit Spot’s commercial bar stools are chosen for that use: cafes, pubs, clubs and staff bars where the stool needs to hold up under constant turnover, not only look good in a showroom.
Whether you need a sled, swivel, fixed, low or high stool, we have a style to suit your space, and if nothing in the current range fits, we’ll source the right stool for you. Our commercial bar stools sit alongside our wider range of hospitality and cafe/restaurant chairs, so a full venue fit-out can be specified from one place.

What makes a bar stool commercial-grade
A commercial bar stool is built to a different brief than a stool sold for a home kitchen. The frame needs to take repeated impact from being pulled in and out, the footrest and glides need to survive scuffing from shoes and mop buckets, and the upholstery, where fitted, needs to resist spills and daily wiping down. Height adjustment, where fitted, needs a gas lift rated for continuous commercial use rather than occasional home use. None of this shows up in a product photo, which is why venue owners buying in volume tend to ask about frame gauge and warranty terms rather than the finish alone.
Bar, pub, cafe or club: matching the stool to the venue
The right commercial bar stool changes with the venue. Pub bar stools generally need to be heavier and more stable, since they take rougher daily use and longer service hours. Cafe stools are more often specified in a lighter, stackable style, since cafes tend to reconfigure their floor plan through the day and need stools that store easily when not in use. Club bar stools lean toward a more design-led look, often upholstered, since the stool is part of the room’s atmosphere as much as its function. Staff bars and back-of-house areas usually call for a simpler, low-maintenance stool with an easy-clean finish rather than a design piece. Sit Spot’s range covers all four, so a multi-venue operator can spec differently by room without switching suppliers.
Fixed, swivel or sled base: which suits your space
A fixed-base stool is the simplest option and generally the most stable, which suits a busy bar where stools are set once and rarely moved. A swivel base lets patrons turn to face the room or a companion without shifting the stool itself, which works well at a communal table or a window bar. A sled-base stool, with a continuous curved frame rather than four legs, tends to handle the daily push-pull of a busy floor better than a four-legged design, since there’s no single leg joint taking the full impact. Which base suits your venue usually comes down to how much the stools get moved through service, not the look alone.
High, low or counter height: getting the height right
Height matters more with bar stools than almost any other seating, since the wrong height against a fixed bar or counter means a customer left perched awkwardly or unable to get their knees under the bench. Standard bar height suits a bar bench around 1050-1100mm, counter height suits a lower bench around 900mm, and low stools suit a casual lounge-style seating area rather than a bar at all. Measure your actual bench height before ordering, since venues that renovate around an existing bar counter often assume standard bar height when their counter is cut to counter height instead.
Mesh, upholstered or timber: choosing a finish
Mesh-backed stools, where available, suit venues that want a lighter, cooler-running seat for warmer climates or busy indoor-outdoor spaces. Upholstered stools read as more premium and suit venues where comfort and finish matter more than easy-clean practicality, though they need more regular cleaning in a spill-heavy environment. Timber and metal-frame stools without upholstery are the easiest to wipe down and hold up well in high-turnover venues, which is why they’re common in cafes and casual dining rather than cocktail bars. Sit Spot’s commercial bar stools cover all three, including the Sophia mesh bar stool and the Casino bar stool among the current range.
Stackable stools for venues that need flexibility
Cafes and function venues that reconfigure their floor regularly benefit from a stackable stool that can be cleared quickly for cleaning or an event changeover. A stackable design trades some of the mass of a fixed stool for the ability to store six or eight stools in the space one would otherwise take, which matters in venues with limited back-of-house storage. Where a venue’s layout is fixed and rarely changes, a non-stacking, heavier stool is usually the better long-term choice for stability.
What to check before you order
A few things matter more with commercial bar stools than with most other seating:
- Frame material and gauge, since this is what determines how the stool holds up to daily impact rather than occasional home use
- Fixed, swivel or sled base, matched to how much the stools move through a service
- Bar, counter or low height, measured against your actual bench height rather than assumed
- Upholstery or hard finish, weighed against how often the venue can realistically clean it
- Footrest and glide condition, since these wear fastest and are the first sign of a stool reaching end of life
- Stackability, if the venue needs to clear floor space for cleaning or events
- AFRDI or BIFMA certification on selected models, useful for venues wanting documented commercial-use ratings
Ordering bar stools in quantity for a venue
Bar stools for a venue are almost always ordered in a matched set, and running out mid-fit-out is a common problem when stock isn’t confirmed up front. Order the full quantity in one placement where possible, and factor in a small number of spares, since a stool damaged in the first few months of service is easier to replace from stock ordered at the same time than sourced later as a one-off match. For a multi-venue operator rolling the same stool across several sites, confirming lead times and stock levels before the rollout starts avoids one site opening short.
Caring for commercial bar stools
Wipe down upholstered and timber finishes at the end of each service rather than waiting for a visible spill to set in, since hospitality environments see more contact with food, drink and hands than almost any other commercial seating. Check gas lift mechanisms and swivel bases periodically, since these see constant movement in a busy venue and are usually the first part to wear. Footrests and glides take the most repeated contact with mops and cleaning equipment, so replacing a worn glide early is cheaper than replacing the stool once the frame itself is damaged from a hard floor. A stool caught early with a loose joint or worn glide is a simple fix; left too long, it becomes a replacement.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a bar stool “commercial-grade” rather than a home bar stool?
A commercial bar stool is built for constant daily use by different people, with a heavier frame, a commercial-rated gas lift where fitted, and finishes chosen to survive spills and regular wiping down rather than occasional home use.
What height bar stool do I need for my bar or counter?
It depends on your bench height. Standard bar height suits a bench around 1050-1100mm, and counter height suits a lower bench around 900mm. Measure your actual counter before ordering rather than assuming.
Are stackable bar stools a good option for a cafe?
Yes, if the venue needs to clear floor space regularly for cleaning or reconfiguring seating. A fixed, heavier stool suits a venue with a layout that rarely changes.
Can I order matching bar stools across several venues?
Yes. Ordering the same stool across multiple sites is common for multi-venue operators, and confirming stock and lead times up front avoids one site opening short.
Do commercial bar stools come in mesh as well as upholstered finishes?
Yes. Sit Spot’s range includes mesh-backed options like the Sophia bar stool alongside upholstered and hard-finish styles like the Casino bar stool.
Can commercial bar stools be delivered outside Sydney?
Yes. Sit Spot is proudly based in Sydney and ships Australia-wide, including regional areas, with on-site assembly available.
